Luxardo Maraschino Cherries
Luxardo cherries are the only maraschino cherries that matter. Neither cloyingly sweet nor bright red, these cherries are deeply flavorful and the standard for cocktails. Luxardo started as a distillery in the early 1800s on the coast of what is now Croatia (but was then an Italian province). They first made maraschino liqueur from sour Marasca cherries. They then started candying cherries in Marasca juice and sugar. And then they fled to Italy after World War II, where the classic maraschino cherries are made today.
